Coots conduct predation on duck nest and ducklings, so we have decided to bring an awareness to this in fun event. We had 58 people sign up with 27 harvesting two or more coots making a total harvest of 84 coots.
We removed the old tower that was becoming unsafe and partnered with "Youth Build" to design and build this amazing tower/blind. Now the local community can enjoy watching the wild life at Kingfisher with out disturbance.
This year's fair was on June 23rd. We had a nice size crowd show up. Lots of fun stuff for the kids to do, touch and learn about. We want to tank all our vendors and volunteers that made this year's fair a success.
Today we set the footings for the new tower and hauled out the old one. Lots of youngsters showed up today to volunteer including a whole family. Making the day feel more like a family project day.
We spent the day tearing down the old observation tower at Kingfisher. This is phase one of a project that will bring a better, larger and safer tower to the wetland.
Long two days, but we got alot accomplished. We cleared 1/2 ache of willow, mowed and racked close to an ache of phragmites and removed more overburden then I believed possible. Cleared an island for future nesting. Dressed up the new Flash board riser with the cement chucks found around the area.
In the end Kingfisher is coming along nicely. We are now seeing goslins and ducklings. Our Cache Valley chapter has worked hard and established a relationship with the Bear River Conservancy. This new relationship has granted us stewardship of the waterfowl nest boxes in the 500 acre area. The chapter installed eight new boxes, removed several old damaged ones and cleaned up a truck load of trash. Not bad for three hours of work. Special thanks tot he dedicated hunters that help on the project.
We had a great turn out of volunteers on this years nest box event. We re-thatched our thirty Mallard hen houses and twenty wood duck boxes. Then installed four Mallard Houses and two wood duck boxes. The Ogden Bay WMA manager reports the Mallard hen houses are starting to be used more. This good news as the program is showing results faster then others of it's kind.
